Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
Of course, there’s an added wrinkle in the Miles Bridges problem – he was due for restricted free agency this summer.
In all likelihood, the Hornets were going to pay him. Now, it’s unlikely that anybody will. On the one hand, that might be a justification for keeping Washington.
Positionally, the two are similar. On the other hand, there’s another question: how much should the Hornets be investing in a mediocre team? They’re unlikely to take that step forward in 2022-23. Meanwhile, Washington hits restricted free agency himself after this season.
Will the Hornets be in a position where paying him feels sensible? If the front office doesn’t think so, they might be better off cutting ties with him now, gaining a first-round pick, and re-evaluating the group they have around LaMelo Ball.
