Of course, age isn’t the only factor that can cause a player’s decline. In fact, players who remain productive until old age are generally the lucky ones.
Sometimes, a hole in a player’s game becomes apparent midway through their career. Often, that occurs during the postseason. If that player’s team has already paid them, it’s unfortunate for all sides.
Such is the case with Duncan Robinson. His defensive limitations were so significant in the 2021-22 postseason that the Heat eventually removed him from their rotation.
Now, they’re on the hook for his deal at $16.9 million a year through to 2026.

Unless, of course, they can pawn it off on a rebuilding team. For example, a team in what’s expected to soon be the Jazz’s position may be willing to take on Robinson’s pact if they’re receiving other quality assets in return.
