How This Trade Impacts Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors have not been shy when it comes to acquiring high-end talent. While there is always a risk, as Toronto isn’t the most attractive landing spot for players, if they can get closer to winning a championship, Masai Ujiri will seriously consider making a trade.

They made a trade for Kawhi Leonard and it paid off with a title despite him leaving in free agency, joining the LA Clippers. They won’t have to worry about Kevin Durant leaving any time soon, as his contract is guaranteed the next four seasons. But, another trade demand could also surface again.

Should Durant land in Toronto, the Raptors would likely become the favorites in the Eastern Conference. The need for a center would still exist, but they would be legitimate contenders with Durant sliding into OG Anunoby’s spot in the lineup.

Having Durant in the fold would push Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam into secondary scoring roles, which they are likely better suited for. Scottie Barnes Jr. remains in the mix as well, which is a major win for the organization.

To make up for not including Barnes, the Raptors are sending a ton of draft picks over to the Nets. Unprotected firsts in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029 with two pick swaps surpass even what the Utah Jazz received for Rudy Gobert, which threw the market for a loop.

Losing another young rotation piece in Gary Trent Jr. will hurt some, but that is the price to pay for elite talent such as Durant. The Raptors have to surrender some talent in the deal and if they won’t include Barnes, someone such as Trent will be asked for.
