Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
The Brooklyn Nets are in a difficult situation. Kevin Durant has requested a trade, and it feels like the market is thinner than they expected.
The reality is no different than any market dilemma. Suppose The Louvre tried to sell the Mona Lisa. Of course it’s exceedingly valuable – too valuable, perhaps, to find a buyer at fair value.
Here, the Nets at least get significant value for their star. Granted, they’re including two stars, but Simmons’ market value is pretty unclear. The Nets could justify that they’re trading Durant for Bam Adebayo and two first-round picks, and Simmons for Herro, a first-round pick, and a swap.
Perhaps that’s not optimal. On the other hand, letting this situation drag on may not be either. It’s hard to identify a Durant suitor who will emerge mid-season with a stronger package.
