‘No Rush’: Latest On Jazz-Knicks Donovan Mitchell Trade Talks

Donovan Mitchell, New York Knicks, NBA Trade Rumors, Utah Jazz

The trade talks surrounding Utah Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell hit a fever pitch last week. Negotiations picked up and it sounded as if a deal with the New York Knicks was close before they stepped away from the deal.

Utah is looking to receive a monster package in return for Mitchell, which is understandable. After what they received from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Rudy Gobert, they are going to look to top that for Mitchell, who is more than four years younger and closer to the type of player that teams are looking to build their team around in the current NBA.

This is something that could take a while to unfold. There are going to be a lot of moving parts and Adrian Wojnarowski believes the Jazz will do their due diligence scouring the league for the best trade package.

“I think for the Jazz, they go out now around the league and see what else is out there for Donovan Mitchell, get a sense of what the market is, what teams are willing to do,” Wojnarowski said. “And I do think the Knicks and the Jazz will reengage at some point. Maybe it’s this week, maybe it’s next week, maybe it’s in two or three weeks. But the Jazz are not going to necessarily move quickly.”

According to the latest reports, the Jazz were asking for six first-round picks and all of the young Knicks core outside of RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish, who are eligible for contract extensions. Quentin Grimes, Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley and Deuce McBride were all asked for in the deal.

Unsurprisingly, the Knicks said no to that and stepped away from negotiations. There will be a lot of posturing from both sides, but you can be sure that each team has a line they won’t cross. It will likely take some time to get to that middle ground, which is why the Jazz will canvas the league.

“Utah and New York talked last week, and I think the Jazz got a sense of what New York might be willing to do,” Wojnarowski said. “It’s not just one particular deal — I think there’s options. It’s almost like a sliding scale. The more players you put in a deal, the less draft picks you want to give up. The more draft assets you put in a deal, you want to put less players in. If you’re the Jazz, ‘I want the players and I want the picks,’ so that’s where it starts.”

Out of the two, Utah likely is in more of a rush. They are the ones heading toward a rebuild and have to move Mitchell, otherwise, they will be in a position to win too many games. Bottoming out and receiving the highest draft picks possible looks to be their plan.

The Knicks know they have the best package to offer the Jazz unless another organization, such as the Miami Heat, can rope in a third or fourth team to help compensate Utah with draft picks. Not many teams have the draft capital that the Knicks possess, but some of it does come with a caveat.

“People talk about (the Knicks being able to trade) seven or eight (first-round) picks. A lot of those picks are conditional, protected picks that are coming from places like Detroit and Washington,” Wojnarowski said. “The Jazz certainly don’t value those the way they do New York’s unprotected picks.”

New York has all of its own picks to include, so that isn’t an issue. They can send all of those and some of the extra ones they have accumulated to appease the Jazz. However, the more draft capital that is included, the weaker the player package will be.

Under Leon Rose, the New York Knicks have done a better job of asset management. He won’t trade the farm away for Mitchell knowing this is the first step in becoming a contending team, not the last.
