San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Russell Westbrook, 2026 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Brooklyn Nets Receive: C Jakob Poeltl, G/F Josh Richardson, F Doug McDermott, 2027 First-Round Pick (Swap – LAL), 2029 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Kyrie Irving
With this deal, the Brooklyn Nets get a first-round pick, a swap and an upgrade to their rotation. Some would say it’s the best of both worlds.
Others would disagree. To be sure, the Nets get a significantly weaker win-now cast with this deal. Still, the players they’re landing should help them win games in 2022-23.
Poeltl highlights the package. He’s a high-end defensive big who can defend the rim and survive in space. Still, McDermott is one of the league’s best three-point shooters, and Richardson is a decent 3-and-D wing.
The Spurs won’t miss them. This team is distinctly rebuilding following their Dejounte Murray trade.

An expiring contract and a first-round pick is a valuable package in return for some veterans they won’t use. Just don’t expect them to use Russell Westbrook either.
