Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
The Celtics make this trade to add some variance to their frontcourt. In essence, Jakob Poeltl would be backing Robert Williams III up, giving them one of the best center rotations in the NBA.
Meanwhile, Al Horford is versatile. Last year, he played the 5 and the 4 for the Celtics in almost equal measures. Look for him to continue doing the same in the wake of this deal.
Furthermore, Horford is also aging. Acquiring Poeltl allows the Celtics to offer the veteran some rest. Come playoff time, that could pay dividends.
Still, the main objective here is to land a player who approaches being seven feet tall. It just gives Boston a different look. They may even be able to survive stretches with Williams III alongside Poeltl.
