Boston Celtics Receive: G Donovan Mitchell
Yes, the Boston Celtics just traded for Malcolm Brogdon. Sure, their guard rotation gets too crowded following this deal. The C’s shouldn’t care one iota.
After all, this is Donovan Mitchell we’re talking about. Adding him on the heels of an NBA Finals trip is an opportunity this organization can’t afford to pass on. In all likelihood, they’d be title favorites falling this trade.
They’ll miss their outgoing players, particularly Williams III. He co-anchored this defense with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart in 2021-22. Arguably, this trade puts too much responsibility on the aging Al Horford’s shoulders heading into next season.
Again, these are all secondary concerns. The Boston Celtics, following this deal, would enter 2022-23 with an offense built around Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Donovan Mitchell. They can add defensive players on the margins. They could even trade Brogdon once he’s eligible, or Smart for a sizeable return.
