Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
There is an element of addition by subtraction involved in this trade for the Los Angeles Lakers. Moving on from Russell Westbrook has its own benefits.
That’s not to sell the players the Lakers are receiving here short. Myles Turner’s ability to space the floor will make him a perfect fit alongside Anthony Davis in a twin towers lineup. Meanwhile, Buddy Hield provides the floor-spacing the Lakers sorely lacked in 2021-22.
Of course, this leaves the Lakers a little lighter on shot creation. If Anthony Davis can’t author a bounceback season in 2022-23, they may not have a sufficient second option on the roster after this deal behind LeBron James.
Here’s the thing: if Davis doesn’t bounce back, the Lakers aren’t going anywhere anyway. That’s as true with Westbrook on their roster as it is with Turner and Hield.

At least this trade gives them some depth, and improves the fit between all the players on their roster. If Davis does return to form, it should also make them contenders in 2022-23.
