Being selected first in the NBA saddles an NBA player with immediate expectations. Fairly or not, they’re expected to be franchise-altering talents.
In many cases, that’s exactly how it works out. Several of the best players in NBA history were taken first. Scouting is not an exact science, but professional talent evaluators aren’t taking wild guesses either.
With that said, they do get it wrong. Sometimes, they get it horribly wrong. Anthony Bennet. Michael Olawakandi. Pervis Ellison.
