Like the Utah Jazz, the San Antonio Spurs were already involved in a significant deal this summer. They sent star guard Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks in return for considerable draft capital.
Unlike the Jazz, the Spurs have now established a clear direction. This team is bottoming out in an effort to build through the draft.
With that in mind, an extra first-round pick won’t hurt their cause. Neither will losing Jakob Poeltl. He’s developed into a high-end defensive big man. With that in mind, he’d make a nice addition to this Jazz team if they are keeping Mitchell.
Poeltl may not be the rim protector that Gobert is, but he still offers plenty on that end. Meanwhile, he’s a little more apt at defending in space than the Stifle Tower. As in the Turner acquisition, this deal replaces Gobert while giving Utah a slightly different look at the 5.
