If there’s any reason to question Collin Sexton’s fit alongside Luka Doncic, it may begin with Darius Garland. It would be fair to say that the recently-extended floor general blossomed in his absence.

With Sexton injured for most of 2021-22, Garland had a career season. It seemed that giving him the ball instead of Sexton did wonders for the exciting young floor-general.

Is that evidence enough of the shortcomings of Sexton’s volume scoring style?

Frankly, no. Garland could have broken out independent of Sexton’s absence. Furthermore, as talented as Garland is, he’s no Luka Doncic. The dynamic between Sexton and Doncic would inevitably differ from the one that existed between Sexton and Garland in Cleveland.

Sexton would surely have to understand that he was the second fiddle in Dallas. Everyone knows this is Doncic’s team. If he was willing to play that role, his shot-creating abilities should bolster Doncic’s game.

Is it worth the Mavericks’ time to find out if he’s willing to play it?
