Last NBA offseason, it looked like the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings had a trade agreed upon. Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, and a first-round pick were heading to Sacramento in exchange for Buddy Hield.
It was so close to being finalized that the players were notified about the deal. However, at the last second, the Lakers pivoted to another deal. Instead of completing this one with the Kings, they sent those two players and pick, along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Russell Westbrook.
It was a high-risk trade as there were a lot of questions about how Westbrook would fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. But, the front office thought that the Big 3 could work.
Spoiler alert, it did not. Instead, it ended up being a disastrous decision for Los Angeles. They were unable to retain Alex Caruso as a result of the trade as well, which was another blow to the team as they struggled to a 33-49 record.
