San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Julius Randle, G/F Cam Reddish, F Obi Toppin, 2025 First-Round Pick (NYK)
New York Knicks Receive: G Dejounte Murray, G Josh Richardson
If the San Antonio Spurs are too squeamish to settle for a package that’s so focused on the draft, they may prefer this deal.
Granted, Julius Randle had a disappointing 2021-22 season after winning the league’s Most Improved Player award the year prior. The Spurs may assume that this season doesn’t represent a new baseline for him. They’ve generally displayed confidence in their coaching and player development. They may feel they can help Randle return to form.
The same logic applies to the acquisition of Cam Reddish. He’s failed to live up to expectations in the league so far, but at 22, he still has the opportunity to make good on his potential. The Spurs would seem like the right organization to help him reach that goal.
Otherwise, Obi Toppin has already proven himself a strong defender at the NBA level. He still has potential to reach as well, but if nothing else, he’s a contributor on that end. Finally, the Spurs still get a draft pick in exchange for Murray.
