The San Antonio Spurs are not generally known for long rebuilding processes. They’ve generally been synonymous with success for the better part of three decades of NBA basketball.
Recently, they’ve failed to meet their own lofty standard. In 2021-22, the Spurs missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. It’s hard to envision exactly how they’ll improve heading into next season.
One bright spot for this team in 2021-22 was Dejounte Murray’s development. With averages of 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, and 8.3 rebounds per game, he’s got a strong case for the league’s most improved player award.
Trading him would be off-brand for the Spurs. Maybe it’s time for them to try something new. It may be that their insistence on remaining competitive in spite of a talent deficit is holding back their ability to build towards the future.
