Why The Utah Jazz Make The Deal
The Utah Jazz make this deal to hedge their bets. It’s a great trade for them if Mitchell is due for departure. If he isn’t, it could still be a good one.
After all, the Jazz were desperate for defensive-minded wings in 2021-22. After Royce O’Neale, they had none. Josh Green provides an instant upgrade on that end. His frenetic energy on the point-preventing side of the ball will be a blessing for the Jazz.
Meanwhile, Spencer Dinwiddie fills in as a Mike Conley replacement. He’s not as good of a player. Dinwiddie is a less reliable floor spacer and a weaker decision-maker than Conley. Still, from a win-now perspective, that downgrade could be worthwhile to facilitate the addition of Green.
Of course, from a rebuilding perspective, this deal makes great sense for the Jazz. They’re landing a 21-year-old with high upside in Green and a first-round pick that’s overwhelmingly likely to convey.
