Well, if this deal is on the table, they probably should be. The New York Knicks aren’t likely to ever get better value for Randle than they’re getting here.

It’s worth noting that Herro is significantly younger than Randle. While it may be true that Randle’s 2020-21 surpasses any season Randle has had to date, he’s still got the potential to be the best player involved in this deal.

In all likelihood, he’d have a more prominent role in New York. If this trade works out, the Knicks could be landing their lead guard for the next decade in exchange for a player who underperformed for them last season.

That’s worth the cost of a first-round pick. It’s also worth the cost of absorbing Duncan Robinson’s contract. If Randle returns to form, and Herro has peaked, the Knicks could regret this deal. On the other hand, if Herro elevates his game, who knows?
