Portland Trail Blazers Receive: G Kyle Lowry, G Tyler Herro, 2023 First-Round Pick (MIA)
Miami Heat Receive: G Damian Lillard
Whether this return looks underwhelming or acceptable to you depends on your view of Tyler Herro. Whether the Portland Trail Blazers are interested in it depends on the same.
On the one hand, Herro is an immensely talented scorer. So far, he’s mostly played the role of sixth man throughout his career, but most would agree he’s overqualified for the position. He’s starting caliber. It just happens to be that he’s a 22-year-old on a perenially contending Heat squad.
On the other hand, he may not be much more than a scorer. As skilled as he is, without elite athleticism, it’s possible that no NBA team is likely to build around a scoring guard in 2022. If Herro can’t develop his playmaking, sixth man may be the most appropriate role for him heading forward.
Of course, he might develop his playmaking. The natural talent is there for Herro to be more than he has been on a team that can afford him a larger opportunity. If the Blazers would like to do so, this trade could appeal to them.
