Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G Tim Hardaway Jr., F Dorian Finney-Smith
Dallas Mavericks Receive: G D’Angelo Russell
This deal has the Minnesota Timberwolves choosing floor-spacing over ball-handling.
Tim Hardaway Jr. can’t replicate much of what Russell provided, but he can do a lot of damage in his own way. It’s possible that the Wolves would prefer what he brings to the table.
If they’re intrigued by the concept of getting the ball in the hands of Towns and Anthony Edwards more frequently, they may prefer this package.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks would suddenly have a glut of point guards following this deal. Between Doncic, Russell, Brunson, and Dinwiddie, they’d have a lot of mouths to feed. On the other hand, maybe that’s fine. The Mavericks could sign and trade Brunson for good value, and be a more well-rounded team than they were in 2021-22.

Frankly, we still prefer the other package. It’s cleaner. Still, this one has its appeal. On the other hand, the Wolves may prefer to receive some draft capital if they’re parting with a player of Russell’s name recognition.
That may be achievable too if they’re willing to absorb a questionable contract.
