Charlotte Hornets Receive: F/G Will Barton, F JaMychael Green, F Jeff Green
Denver Nuggets Receive: F Gordon Hayward
This deal is all about fiscal responsibility for the Charlotte Hornets.
As it stands, they’re extra motivated to make cap space. They’ve got Miles Bridges hitting restricted free agency this summer, and LaMelo Ball will be due for a rookie extension soon after. They’re motivated to get Hayward’s $30 million dollar salary off the books as soon as possible.
This deal helps them do so by bringing in three expiring contracts. It’s hard to say this deal makes them better in the short term, but it shouldn’t sink them either. Each of the players they’re receiving in return for Hayward is a useful rotation player.
Meanwhile, this is a pure win-now move for the Nuggets. Hayward may have fallen from his former star level due to injuries, but he’s still the best player involved in this deal.

If the Nuggets think he can take them to the next level, they’ll be happy to make this deal. Whether they’re happy to make the next one is a more controversial question.
