How This Trade Impacts Charlotte Hornets
The Charlotte Hornets have a few main goals this offseason. First, they need to figure out who their head coach will be, as that decision has seemingly come down to either Mike D’Antoni or Kenny Atkinson. After that, it is time to address the roster.
Finding an answer in the middle at the center spot is likely atop their to-do list when it comes to roster needs. Fixing their defense is also a must-do if they want to continue climbing the Eastern Conference standings. After that, slashing some future salary is something they will look to do, as Miles Bridges could very well sign a max contract this offseason.
This trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers doesn’t address their need to improve defensively, they are getting two solid rotation players in Kevin Love and Cedi Osman while cutting back their salary.
Love can help the team with his 3-point shooting and watching him throw full-court passes to the Hornets’ youngsters would be a blast. He is also an excellent rebounder, which the team can use more of.

Osman is a solid option to soak up minutes on the wing with some 3-and-D production. Kelly Oubre Jr. has popped up in some trade rumors this offseason and Osman can step into filling the role he had.
The biggest takeaway from this deal is getting off of Hayward’s contract, which seems to be goal No. 1 in Charlotte. They also get out from under the final season in Mason Plumlee’s contract, as Osman’s deal isn’t guaranteed beyond 2023. This ensures they have the flexibility to make other deals.
