Indiana Pacers Receive: G Russell Westbrook, G/F Ben Simmons, 2023 First-Round Pick (PHI), 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: C Myles Turner, G Malcolm Brogdon, G Buddy Hield
Brooklyn Nets Receive: C/F Anthony Davis
If the Los Angeles Lakers do trade Anthony Davis this summer, most would expect them to land a star player in return. On the other hand, what if they aimed for depth?
This deal finds them getting off Westbrook’s contract and landing three starting-caliber players in the process. The cost is Anthony Davis and a first-round pick. If it puts them in a position to compete for the NBA title next season, it’ll be well worth it.
Meanwhile, the Pacers absorb Westbrook’s expiring contract for the sake of landing Simmons and two first-round picks. Granted, it’s a risk for them. If Simmons can’t get his act together, they’re giving up a lot for the sake of a generally unavailable player and a pair of first-round selections.
In fact, acquiring Simmons will be a risk for any team. On the other hand, some risks pay off. If Simmons does get right, the Pacers could be securing their future core with this deal.
