How This Trade Impacts Phoenix Suns

For whatever reason, the Phoenix Suns seem hesitant to commit long-term money to Deandre Ayton if the price is near a max amount. Ayton has developed well during the first four seasons of his career and you would imagine the Suns would want to keep him around. But, if they have a price they won’t go above to keep him, he could very well be on the move this summer.

If that is the case, Phoenix has to make the most of that decision. Working out a sign-and-trade will at least ensure they get some value back for the former No. 1 overall pick. This deal with the Charlotte Hornets would certainly accomplish that.

P.J. Washington provides the team with another excellent combo big man as he can replace a lot of what was missing with Dario Saric sidelined. Washington is a good 3-point shooter, solid rebounder, and vastly improved defender. That versatility will help match up against different lineups opponents throw at the Suns.

Mason Plumlee provides some value as a low-usage player that does a little bit of everything. He keeps the ball moving on offense and is active on defense. Kelly Oubre Jr. would likely welcome a move back to Phoenix, where he averaged 18.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game during the 2019-20 season.

The No. 13 pick would provide the Suns to add an affordable young piece to the roster should they choose to hold onto it. If not, they can use that as a trade chip to acquire an established player to help them get close to winning the NBA Finals, as they are in win-now mode.
