Making the Case: Philadelphia 76ers

Arguably the most appealing aspect of the hypothetical trade return the Philadelphia 76ers would be receiving is actually Duncan Robinson, not Kyle Lowry. Let me explain.

The 76ers already have an electric backcourt duo with Tyrese Maxey and James Harden with Joel Embiid’s elite center presence in the middle. What they need around them are elite shooting and sufficient defensive impact.

Imagine possessions like this: Harden receives a high ball screen from Embiid with Robinson deployed as a back screener in “Stack” pick-and-roll. The defense then has to decide how they want to switch against two dangerous isolation scorers and an elite shooter.

Now, consider this, Embiid has the ball out in space and is operating out of a dribble handoff two-man game with Robinson much like he’s thrived in doing with Bam Adebayo on the Miami Heat. Just about any defense would get overwhelmed having to handle that.

Lowry is a helpful talent when he’s healthy and it helps that he’s signed through only 2023-24 just like Tobias Harris. The 76ers wouldn’t have a contract extension with Maxey kicking in until the 2024-25 season anyway.
