The Dallas Mavericks are on the cusp of being legitimate contenders in the NBA. They made great strides in the first season under general manager Nico Harrison and head coach Jason Kidd, now it is time to continue building on that foundation.

Having a perennial MVP candidate in Luka Doncic as part of that foundation certainly helps. Doncic is good enough to shoulder a lot of the load and is someone that players should want to team up with.

Selling prospective free agents on their plan is much easier with Luka Doncic already in place. This offseason they should continue bolstering the lineup around him, finding players that can fill a specific role to help the team win.

Some people believe the Dallas Mavericks are one player away from reaching contender status. A center in the mold of Tyson Chandler, whose acquisition just over 10 years ago helped the Mavericks get over the hump for a title, is what many believe the team needs.

Alas, the front office isn’t going to limit themselves to only one specific type of player. If someone becomes available that they think can help them win, they will pursue the said player. Could that person ultimately be Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls?

Zach LaVine is entering unrestricted free agency and it no longer seems like a closed and shut case that he will be returning to Chicago. Dallas is one of the teams that could get into the bidding in a sign-and-trade scenario for LaVine according to Marc Stein on his Substack.

“Sources nonetheless maintain that one option already being weighed by team [Mavericks] brass is the prospect of joining the sign-and-trade bidding for the Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine, amid a growing belief around the league that LaVine, as he heads into free agency, has more interest in leaving Chicago than initially presumed.”

Dallas is reportedly going to look into acquiring an All-Star this offseason to pair with Luka Doncic. Zach LaVine would fit the bill as someone that can take pressure off of him as the focal point of the offense. While LaVine wouldn’t be the No. 1 option in the offense, with Doncic filling that role, the chance to compete for a title could be enough to sway him into believing Dallas is the best place for him.

Given how strong the supporting cast is for the Dallas Mavericks, especially if they can re-sign Jalen Brunson in free agency, this is a team that will have a ton of offensive firepower. If they can keep up the intensity and production on the defensive side of the ball, they would be very tough to stop.
