Some will question why the Raptors are receiving a pick here. Consider this a gamble that they’d value Siakam over Gobert. It’s a defensible position. Gobert may be the league’s best defensive big, but Siakam is no slouch on that end either, and he’s a viable offensive engine.
This trade only works if Mitchell signifies that he’d be willing to stay in Utah if they moved Gobert. In that event, their front office likely wouldn’t hesitate to move the Frenchman along with a first-rounder to acquire Siakam. They’d be forming one of the stronger duos in the NBA with this trade.
Frankly, we’d expect more hesitation from Toronto here. At the same time, they may budge. Scottie Barnes’ skillset is remarkably similar to Siakam’s. The Raptors would make this trade to improve their floor balance.
