Phoenix Suns Receive: G Spencer Dinwiddie, F/C Maxi Kleber, F Josh Green, 2025 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Brooklyn Nets Receive: C Deandre Ayton, G/F Reggie Bullock, 2028 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Kevin Durant
This trade puts the Brooklyn Nets in an odd position. On the one hand, they suddenly appear to be a rebuilding team. We’re still assuming that Kyrie Irving is playing elsewhere in 2022-23 in this scenario.
Now, they’ve got two former number one overall picks in Ayton and Ben Simmons. Unfortunately, they don’t project as likely to fit together. As a non-shooting lead ball-handler, Simmons is optimized alongside a stretch big.
Ayton is not one. That’s likely a large part of why Phoenix seems to view him as expendable. Still, this scenario gives the Nets options. Who knows: with some coaching ingenuity, maybe Ayton and Simmons could play together? Otherwise, they’ve got two potentially valuable trade chips.
Meanwhile, this deal is interesting for the Suns. They could use a guard like Dinwiddie to strengthen their rotation, and Kleber gives them an element of floor spacing at the center spot. He’s also a more versatile defender than Ayton if a less effective interior defender.
