Washington Wizards Receive: G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., F Davis Bertans, F Josh Green, 2024 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2025 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2026 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2027 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Bradley Beal
We call this one the Harden-to-Brooklyn special.
Like the deal that saw the bearded superstar relocate from Houston to Brooklyn, this trade finds a team trading a star player in exchange for control over the other team’s draft for the foreseeable future. Also, like the Harden trade, it will be criticized before it’s given the opportunity to play out.
Whether you see it as a fair return for Beal will depend on how you view the draft. Certainly, it’s a gamble for Washington. By pairing Doncic and Beal, the Mavericks will be decreasing the odds that any of these picks will convey in the lottery.
At the same time, the NBA is notoriously unpredictable. Even that same Harden trade looks much different now than it did when the Nets and Rockets made it. Critics suggested that the Rockets were foolish to take so many draft picks from a team featuring Harden, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving. Without digressing much further, the situation in Brooklyn now looks considerably more volatile.
