Why The Sacramento Kings Make The Deal
The Indiana Pacers may prefer to be competitive next season. The Sacramento Kings are desperate to be.
In fact, if the Kings turn this deal down, it’s because a better win-now package became available for the fourth pick. The Pistons would surely send them Jerami Grant for the selection if they’re willing to trade for a veteran without receiving a pick back.
The Kings may well take that course of action. On the other hand, Grant for the fourth pick is a bad value deal for them. With this trade, they get a 36% career three-point shooting combo forward and still get to pick within the top 10 of the draft.
That affords the Kings some flexibility. They could select Murray as mentioned, and in all likelihood, add a player that’s ready to contribute.

Alternatively, Shaedon Sharpe may be available. He’s not likely to be ready to make meaningful contributions to a playoff team, but his upside is tantalizing. He’d give the Kings an insurance policy in case they find themselves rebuilding again sooner than later.
Either way, this deal allows the Kings to select a rookie and bring in a ready-made contributor. In their situation, that’s a win-win.
