It’s hard to imagine where the New York Knicks will go next. Entering last NBA offseason, the future looked bright. Julius Randle had emerged as a bonafide superstar. RJ Barrett was making strides towards the same mark.
The supporting cast was delivering, and the Knicks earned a trip to the postseason.
In 2021-22, the wheels fell off. Randle regressed mightily. Barrett stagnated, increasing his volume at the expense of his efficiency. Obvious gaps in this roster became apparent. The Knicks didn’t even earn a trip to the play-in tournament.
One bright spot in the season was Obi Toppin’s development. The sophomore forward increased his scoring output from 4.1 to 9.0 points per game. He began to emerge as a versatile defender and transition terror as the season advanced.
