Atlanta Hawks Receive: G Buddy Hield, 2022 First-Round Pick (No. 6 – IND)
Indiana Pacers Receive: F John Collins
Of every package we’ve proposed here, this might be a dream scenario for the Indiana Pacers. At 24, he’s already an impact player with room to grow with the organization.
He’s also a perfect frontcourt partner for Myles Turner. Collins isn’t an outstanding defender, but he’s solid. He’s bouncy, rangy, and able to cover a range of positions. He allows Turner to stay in drop coverage where he belongs.
Meanwhile, the trade is about clearing cap for the Hawks. They’re committed to Collins for three more seasons after next year. Meanwhile, Hield’s contract expires in 2023-24. They’ll be hoping to use their newfound space to sign a star player in that timeframe.
The safer money remains on the Pacers keeping this pick. It allows them to choose a player of the future to grow with the organization. At the same time, if they’d like to expedite this rebuild, they may ship it somewhere else.
