Making the Case: Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns need to make a move to salvage some value in Deandre Ayton’s exit. This move would be wise, as it doesn’t jeopardize their status as one of the NBA’s top contenders.
The Phoenix Suns’ offense let them down at the most pivotal moment of their season. The Suns mustered an embarrassing 27 points in the first half of their Game 7 loss. Adding Christian Wood and Eric Gordon would be a huge boost in preventing something like that from repeating.
Christian Wood is one of the most exciting offensive bigs in the league. He’s a true sharpshooter from outside, and he has the ball-handling ability to take advantage on drives as well. He’s thinner than Ayton, and concedes some strength to him, but Wood presents a wider diversity of offensive talent. He could give the Suns’ offense a dangerous new element that would prevent future 27-point-half type disasters.
Gordon is a solid addition on the offensive end as well. He was one of the key pieces around James Harden when Houston was knocking on the door of the NBA Finals. Gordon averaged 16.8 points and 36.4% three-point shooting from 2016-19, and was a valuable piece of Houston’s switching defense.

It’s been a few years, but Gordon’s skill set would make him a valuable contributor to a contending team. If Phoenix could get both him and Wood in exchange for an Ayton with one foot already out the door, they’d be wise to do so.
