Orlando Magic Receive: G Devonte’ Graham, 2024 First-Round Pick (MIL)
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: G Markelle Fultz
If acquiring Derrick Rose is a solid punt, consider this move more of a wild, homerun swing.
Markelle Fultz has fallen considerably short of the expectations strapped to him when he was selected with the number one pick. He’s still flashed potential to be a high-end, starting-caliber point guard. It’s hard to believe he’s still just 23. The Pelicans are gambling on his upside here.
Meanwhile, the Magic are cutting ties with it. They’ve definitely got a young point guard to spare. Cole Anthony emerged as a potential All-Star last season. Jalen Suggs struggled in his rookie season, but he’s still got the tools to breakout. With the Magic landing the top pick in the 2022 NBA draft, his friendship with Chet Holmgren could be a factor as well.
Fultz feels like the odd man out. Here, the Magic at least receive a first-round pick for him. That’s probably the best value they can get for him in light of his struggles to date and his injury history.
