Chicago Bulls Receive: G Spencer Dinwiddie, 2022 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Nikola Vucevic
There’s an added bonus baked into this trade for the Bulls. In acquiring Dinwiddie, they also render Cobey White expendable.
At 22, White still has potential. He’s got great positional size and natural scoring ability, but poor decision-making has held his career back to this point. It’s likely that the 29-year-old Dinwiddie will remain a better player through 2022-23. In acquiring him, the Bulls set themselves up to trade White to a rebuilding team for another impact veteran.
The other benefit is, of course, that they’re acquiring Spencer Dinwiddie. Assuming they retain LaVine, he’d be an ideal sixth man behind the Lonzo Ball / LaVine backcourt. He’s a combo guard that can sub in for either. While he’s had his own struggles with efficiency, he is a dynamic, high IQ guard that applies constant pressure on opposing defenses.
Cutting ties with Vucevic isn’t ideal for the Bulls. He was supposed to be the third star in a Big 3. Last season, it simply didn’t work out that way.
