Los Angeles Lakers receive: F Julius Randle, G/F Evan Fournier
New York Knicks Receive: G Russell Westbrook
How do you get rid of a bad contract? Swap it for two less-bad contracts!
Julius Randle had a similarly disappointing 2021-22 as Westbrook. He was a far more productive player, but he did not live up to the $26.1 million price tag attached to his name. That contract runs for three more years.
Evan Fournier is unequivocally overpaid too. He’ll be making $18 million over the next two seasons. He’s not worth it. With this deal, the New York Knicks swap two bad contracts for one awful one. Here’s the rub: Westbrook’s deal expires after this season. The Knicks would be setting themselves up to go hunt a free agent worthy of big money in 2023 with this swap.
As for the Los Angeles Lakers, their focus here is clearly on the present. If Julius Randle can resume his 2020-21 levels of production, this could be a steal for them. Even if he splits the difference between this season and last year, they could be dangerous in 2022-23.

We know Knicks fans won’t like this deal. Money-saving moves are generally met with derision. If making this deal allows the team to sign a superstar down the line, they’ll appreciate it then.
