Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G Derrick Rose, G/F Evan Fournier, 2023 First-Round Pick (DAL)
New York Knicks Receive: G D’Angelo Russell

Lots of folks around the league seem to be expecting the New York Knicks to go big game hunting this summer. While they may have their eyes on bigger prizes than D’Angelo Russell, he would be the highest-profile guard they’ve rostered in quite some time.

As for the Minnesota Timberwolves, they’re sacrificing star power for depth here. At this stage in their respective careers, neither Rose or Fournier is capable of making the same impact as Russell. They’re still both solid rotation pieces.

With Anthony Edwards emerging as a superstar, the Wolves could decide that’s more valuable to them than Russell at this point. They’re also coming away with a first-round pick in return for the best player in this deal.

There are reasons why both sides may reject this trade. The Wolves may feel they’re being inadequately compensated for Russell.

Meanwhile, the Knicks may see this as a lateral move that needlessly disrupts chemistry. Russell may be better than Rose at this stage of his career, but is he so far ahead of him that it’s worth sacrificing a first-round pick to swap them?

If that’s how either side feels, there may be another deal that benefits both sides.
