By including the Houston Rockets in their party, the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics find a way to get a little more value for the pieces they’re surrendering.
In particular, Thibodeau might be a little more inclined to say goodbye to Derrick Rose if he’s receiving two quality defensive wings in return. In particular, Jae’Sean Tate is a nice addition to this Knicks club. His aggressive, versatile brand of defense would fit nicely with the culture Thibs is hoping to establish. The Knicks didn’t look high on Reddish in the first place: they shouldn’t mind parting with him here.
Meanwhile, the Rockets should be happy to welcome him. Reddish hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations he set pre-draft. At 22, he still has ample time to do so. The Rockets are in the early stages of a rebuild. They’d be in a perfect position to afford him the leniency he needs to grow.
Finally, the Celtics add a couple of second-round draft picks for their troubles. Those may not be the most valuable assets. That’s fine. Almost any billionaire will tell you that every penny counts. They’re filling a position of need while adding some assets in the process.

All of which hinges on the outcome of the ongoing Bucks/Celtics series. If the C’s emerge victorious, they probably won’t be interested in either of these packages. If they don’t, Rose could be the perfect target to get them to the next level.
