This will hurt New York Knicks fans to hear, but trading for Donovan Mitchell will not lead to a contender anytime soon. The Knicks simply do not have the assets available to swing a trade for Spida and still field a competitive team afterward.

While New York has uncovered a decent cache of solid young prospects, none have the star potential to headline a blockbuster deal aside from RJ Barrett. Even if the Knicks were able to pair Mitchell with Barrett, New York still feels like a Play-In squad at best.

New York has been thirsting for a true superstar since Carmelo Anthony left the Big Apple, but they’ll have to convince Spida to come via free agency if they mean to compete with him in his prime.

Otherwise, the hope would be that even after stripping their depth and future assets to acquire Mitchell, he and the prospects of playing for one of the NBA’s biggest markets would be enough to convince some top-billing free agents to sign with the Knicks.

It’s been proven time and again why that’s a severely flawed plan, and it would be in this case too. Instead, the New York Knicks should bide their time and continue to develop their young pieces. Then, either they’ll come upon a star organically and eventually land one in free agency who desires to play with their homegrown core.
