Why It Makes Sense For The San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are making a huge investment in Anthony Davis here. If you’re a fan of theirs and this article is making you feel uneasy, we don’t blame you.
Three first-round picks are a steep price. It’s also the only price to pay for the Spurs to realistically get in on the hypothetical Davis sweepstakes. Trading Dejounte Murray seems counterproductive.
For one thing, given Davis’ injury concerns and Murray’s 2021-22 breakout, he may have more trade value than AD alone. Furthermore, the Spurs don’t have enough talent on this roster to justify adding a star at the expense of another. The idea would be to pair Davis with Murray.
That pairing would have the potential to be devastating. Murray has established himself as one of the league’s premier guards. If Davis can return to form, it’s not unrealistic to think the Spurs could enter 2022-23 with two top 15 players.

They’d also have a strong infrastructure to support them. With supporting players like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jakob Poeltl, the Spurs could be a few under-the-radar veterans away from fielding a true title contender.
This may not b the path Spurs fans envisioned the organization following. Sometimes, you chart a course, but then a better one comes along. If Anthony Davis hits the trade market this summer, the Spurs may be forced to pivot.
