Donovan Mitchell Continues Masterful Postseason Play
For years the Dallas Mavericks relied heavily on their offense to win them games. They took part in some high-scoring, run-and-gun affairs without much of a presence defensively. It is a tough way to win games and they found that out the hard way.
This season, however, Jason Kidd has gotten them on track defensively. The Mavericks have been one of the best defensive teams in the NBA throughout the season, but that won’t be enough to slow down Donovan Mitchell.
Mitchell has played in 33 postseason games and has proven the lights aren’t too bright for him. He has been excellent, averaging 28.8 points per game in his postseason career to go along with 5.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.1 steals. In the last two seasons he has gone nuclear, averaging 33.9 points per game, including a postseason-high 36.4 points per game in 2020.
Those performances will continue against the Mavericks who are a strong defensive unit but lack many options to slow down players on the perimeter. Dorian Finney-Smith may be tasked with slowing down Mitchell, but he is cut out to slow down wings and forwards, not guards.
