Houston Rockets

After a long stretch of success, the Houston Rockets find themselves in the NBA’s basement. They’re on pace to finish with one of the league’s worst records for the second season.

They’ve spent much of this season experimenting with Kevin Porter Jr. as their point guard. The experiment has yielded mixed results. Porter Jr. is averaging 6.2 assists and 3.2 turnovers per contest. Furthermore, he’s regressed in several statistical categories compared to last season.

Both his volume and efficiency have suffered, perhaps due to the full-time move to the league’s most difficult position.

However the Rockets plan on using Porter Jr. next season, Ricky Rubio could be of service. If they intend to move Porter Jr. to the second unit, or the wing, they could bring in the veteran to fill the starting vacancy.

On the other hand, if they intend on extending Porter Jr.’s tenure starting in that spot, bringing in a heady veteran like Rubio to mentor him could be beneficial.

The Rockets probably aren’t playing for the NBA Championship anytime soon. They certainly won’t be in 2022-23. If Rubio opts to land in Space City, it’ll have to be because a mentorship role appeals to him.

If it does, the Rockets shouldn’t hesitate to offer him one.
