Things have not gone according to plan for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-22 NBA season. With LeBron James in pursuit of another championship, he cannot afford to waste time for them to figure things out.

The Lakers’ unwillingness to compete with other big market teams in the luxury tax department like the LA Clippers and Golden State Warriors make it challenging for James’ desired style of roster construction to be utilized.

Los Angeles already depleted their draft capital by acquiring Anthony Davis along with parting with key young players like Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and Lonzo Ball. The Lakers then parted with their role players in the deal to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards.

At this point, there just isn’t an outlook for the Lakers to turn things around. The Lakers will have to deplete an asset just to part with Westbrook in the offseason in what will likely be at best a lateral move.
