John Wall – Houston Rockets
It is no secret that the Celtics are interested in adding a player like John Wall to their backcourt, but like every other team in the league interested in Wall, they could not afford to bring in his salary at the trade deadline.
Making $44.3 million this season and set to make $47.3 million next season, assuming he opts into his player option, John Wall is basically on an “immovable contract”.
There were some trade discussions between the Rockets and Lakers surrounding Wall and Westbrook at the trade deadline, but Houston was not willing to part with the veteran point guard for just Russell Westbrook.
Now, with John Wall still in Houston, the question now becomes whether or not he will eventually be bought out of his contract.
LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Celtics, Rockets Complete Trade Featuring Dennis Schroder
Maybe the Rockets will wait until the offseason to make a move on his future, especially since they are in no rush to make any significant changes to their franchise right now, but the Celtics will be one of many teams to try and sign John Wall if he reaches a buyout agreement with the Rockets.
Suffering various major injuries through the years, John Wall is definitely not the same All-Star talent he once was, but he could fill a major void the Celtics have in their backcourt.
In 40 games with the Rockets last season, Wall averaged 20.6 points, 6.9 assists, 1.1 steals and shot 40.4% from the floor, proving that he can still be an all-around offensive weapon with the ball in his hands as the primary facilitator for his team.
LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Celtics, Rockets Complete Trade Featuring Dennis Schroder
Marcus Smart can only do so much as a “point guard” for the Celtics and with Dennis Schroder gone, Boston’s backcourt is extremely thin. They are expected to pursue a point guard in the buyout market this season and there would be no better options for them than John Wall.
His experience and playmaking abilities are exactly what Boston is lacking next to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown right now.
