Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
There have been some discussions about whether or not the Spurs should try and leverage Jakob Poeltl while his value is high, but they should not have any reason to want to move him.
As mentioned earlier, the Spurs are a rebuilding franchise and one move is not going to be the difference in them making the playoffs this season. They are definitely in a better spot than other rebuilding franchises like the Pistons and Magic, but it is still going to be a while until the Spurs are a finished product.
Continuing to build with Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson and Jakob Poeltl should be their priority, especially since they already have some young talents in development that they are excited about long-term.
Adding a first-round pick in 2022 to go along with their own that will likely be a lottery pick can bring a ton of value to this franchise, but by trading Poeltl, the Spurs would be forced to search for another young, dynamic center.

This basically seems like a lateral move for the Spurs, especially since whoever they would draft with the Toronto Raptors’ first-round pick would still need to develop and learn San Antonio’s system.
