Does this trade make sense for the Detroit Pistons?
Trading both Jerami Grant and Kelly Olynyk could realistically happen at the trade deadline this season and this trade with the New Orleans Pelicans is not terrible for the Detroit Pistons at all.
Taking on Tomas Satoransky’s contract does nothing for the Pistons, but Josh Hart, Jaxson Hayes and draft compensation is definitely favorable to a young, rebuilding franchise like Detroit. Both young talents in Hart and Hayes could play critical roles in the Pistons’ rotations for years to come, but the question in play here is whether the draft compensation they receive is worthwhile.
Detroit wants to rebuild quickly right now with high-level, young talents in Cade Cunningham and Saddiq Bey, but a 2025 first-round pick does nothing for them.
Because of prior trades New Orleans has made, they have a bunch of pick swaps that they could restructure to trade to the Pistons, but things can get complicated with the Pelicans future draft picks as a result.

In order to give up both Grant and Olynyk, the Detroit Pistons may very well request at least two immediate first-round picks from any team in this league, something the Pelicans would have trouble presenting to them.
This is definitely not a terrible trade for Detroit and they could absolutely become a much better team building with Josh Hart and Jaxson Hayes for the future, but they can probably get more value from someone else for Jerami Grant alone.
