Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?
There is definitely upside to be had by trading for someone like Robert Covington, especially since the Celtics can basically get him for “free”.
They would still need to trade away some assets like Williams and Portland’s second-round pick, but there is no financial cost for Boston in this deal since they have a massive trade exception.
After executing a sign-and-trade this offseason, sending Evan Fournier to the New York Knicks, the Celtics created a $17.1M trade exception for themselves that is set to expire in July. The trade deadline is the only opportunity for Boston to utilize this trade exception, which is why Covington could be someone they target with it.
Now in his 9th season in the league, Robert Covington is still an impactful defender and could be another wing shooter the Celtics can utilize next to Tatum and Brown. As a team, they currently rank 23rd in the league in three-point shooting percentage, which is why the veteran could be of use to the Celtics.

Neither Herangomez or Williams present an upside to winning for the Celtics this season and if they cannot pursue anyone better on the trade market, then Robert Covington would bring value to the Celtics as a playoff hopeful this season. Boston has nothing to lose in this deal, which is why it is worthwhile for them.
