Would this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
For the Dallas Mavericks, this may seem like an odd trade to make. However, in the grand scheme of things, it could be worth it for them to consider this. The fit of Russell Westbrook and Luka Doncic may not be great, but the price they are paying isn’t bad at all.
Westbrook would be a solid secondary playmaking option next to Doncic, and if he would be willing to buy into a different role, this team could maybe work. They would just need to focus on adding extra shooting (enter Wayne Ellington) around that core.
Tim Hardaway Jr. has been a dud this year, and as crazy as this sounds, Westbrook is only shooting around four percent worse than him from deep. Plus, he provides extra rebounding and playmaking. It’s obviously more complicated than that, but how much of a change would it be?
Plus, Ellington would give Dallas a decent little shooting boost. And this trade would also see the Mavericks open up a bunch of cap space at the end of next season. Instead of having to wait for Hardaway and Bullock’s contracts to be up, Westbrook’s is up at the end of next year.

As crazy as this trade may seem, it could actually help the Mavericks out in the long run. They’d be ditching two of their uglier long-term contracts in exchange for one, very ugly shorter-term contract. Why not think about making this absolutely insane (and very unlikely) trade for Westbrook?
