Would this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

Before making a significant investment at the center position, the Dallas Mavericks must decide the long-term position for Kristaps Porzinigs, or his future with the organization altogether.

Porzingis is having a strong season with averages of 20.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He has sorely struggled to convert from beyond the arc as he’s shooting just 28.2 percent.

From my perspective, it’s clear that Porzingis, who stands at 7-foot-3, needs to be anchoring the center position or else there’s not enough quickness in a unit to defend at a sufficient level.

By adding Christian Wood into the mix, the Mavericks would be having to play Porzingis alongside Wood in the frontcourt. The options for the half-court offense would be intriguing, but the lack of foot speed on defense would be concerning.

There is an alternative option of subsequently moving Porzingis in separate trade to involve Wood as the long-term center. If the goal is to reduce spending in the supporting cast then there’s a real case to be made given the considerable discrepancy in salaries.
