How This Trade Impacts Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons do not want to trade Jerami Grant and Grant does not want to leave Detroit. But, for the betterment of the franchise, this is likely a move that will occur sooner than later.
Given the current state of the roster, as they are rebuilding, there really is no reason Detroit should sign Grant to the extension or new contract he will be seeking this offseason or next.
So, cashing in when his value is high, as he is garnering a lot of attention around the league, makes sense. However, this deal with the Celtics likely isn’t the one they will be looking to cash in on.
If they are going to part ways with Grant, they will likely be looking to get some draft capital in return. If draft picks aren’t included, they will want a high-upside younger player.

Neither of those things is really coming back in this deal, not to mention they are also being saddled with a huge Marcus Smart contract. At that point, the Pistons would just be better off keeping Grant at the price tag he wants instead of flipping it into Smart’s large contract.
Aaron Nesmith would provide some much-needed perimeter shooting, as the Pistons struggle on 3-pointers. Romeo Langford has some two-way potential, but the Pistons have plenty of players that can fill a similar role already fighting for playing time.

Without draft pick compensation, taking on the contract of Smart should be a no-go for Detroit. With how much interest there reportedly is around the league in Grant, this offer from the Celtics likely falls short.
