Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

The Dallas Mavericks are a good team in the Western Conference right now, but they are not a great team and they have not been a great team for years now. While they have made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, this franchise has not won a playoff series since they won their only title in 2011.

Luka Doncic is a fantastic talent and is going to continue being a real MVP candidate for the rest of his career, but who else does this team really have right now?

Kristaps Porzingis was someone Mavs fans were pleading to trade in the offseason, Tim Hardaway Jr. is not much more than catch-and-shoot perimeter threat and they have a bunch of secondary talents on their roster.

Nobody other than Doncic and Brunson can make plays for themselves on this team, which is why adding Dennis Schroder actually proves to be more useful than one would imagine.

Say what you want about him, but Dennis Schroder has proven time and time again to be effective and he really was not terrible in Los Angeles, they just did not put him in a situation to succeed.

Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Schroder has averaged 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and has shot 44.0% from the floor, 33.9% from three-point range. He is as consistent as they come in the backcourt and the one thing that has really stood out about his play over the years is his ability to play with a team’s second unit.

Dennis Schroder was a Sixth-Man of the Year candidate with the Thunder during the 2019-20 and so far with Boston this season, he has continued to live up to this status.

He is not an All-Star-level guard and is not going to consistently average 20 points a night, but Schroder would easily average at least 15 points per game in Dallas and be a spark for them offensively.

Again, this is not a move that would shock the NBA and immediately make the Mavericks title threats in the Western Conference, but this move cannot hurt them. The worst thing that happens is that they would still lose in the first round of the playoffs, Schroder becomes a free agent and the Mavs use this cap space to pay their current players.

Josh Green does have the potential to be something special moving forward, but the Mavericks want to win now and Green does not give them the best chance to do so. They need a lot more than Dennis Schroder, but making this trade with the Celtics is a good start for the Mavericks ahead of the trade deadline.
